Solar Outdoor Pendant Light with Woven Bell Shade and Chain

Hanging light outdoors is normally the hardest thing to arrange, because a pendant needs a fixed point and a cable, and pergolas rarely have either. A solar pendant removes both requirements. What is left is a hook and a decision about where the light should fall, which is why these tend to end up in groups rather than singly, spaced along a beam or clustered over a table where the light is actually wanted.

Rattan or Iron, and the Light Each Gives

The rattan version is woven in a loose natural weave that glows amber when lit, with the strands themselves picking up light. It reads warm and organic and suits timber pergolas, planting and the coastal look shown in the images.

The iron version uses a fine dark mesh instead. Less of the shade itself lights up, so the effect is crisper: a contained glow with a sharper shadow pattern beneath. It holds up better against modern materials such as painted steel and rendered walls, and it is the cheaper of the two. Both use the same solar disc, LED and chain, so the choice is purely about the shade.

Charging, Runtime and Placement

The solar disc sits flat in the top of the shade and needs a clear view of the sky. Under a solid roof it will not charge, which rules out a covered porch ceiling; a slatted pergola, an open beam or a tree branch all work because sun reaches the top through the day.

Output is warm white at 3000K over 54 to 108 square feet, which is ambient light for a table rather than illumination for a whole terrace. Hanging three or four across a seating area gives a far better result than expecting one to do the work of a floodlight, and the overlapping pools of light are what make the arrangement look considered rather than sparse.

Size, Drop and Weather Rating

The shade measures 8.6 inches across and the adjustable chain gives 22.5 inches of drop, for a total hanging height of 29.5 inches from the hook. Over a dining table that puts the shade comfortably above eye level for anyone seated.

The rating is IP44, which covers splashing water from any direction. That is appropriate for a fixture hanging in the open and exposed to rain, though it is a lower rating than the IP65 used on wall fixtures and the lantern is best brought in ahead of a serious storm. At 2.2 pounds it is light enough to hang from a branch or a slim pergola rafter without reinforcement.
