A glass globe held inside a banded metal cage on a moulded aluminium base, sized to cap a fence post or a masonry gate pier. The cage gives the fixture its shape by day and casts a ribbed shadow pattern once it is lit, which is what separates it from a plain globe lantern. A post light is doing something different from a wall light. It sits at waist or chest height on top of a pier or a fence post, so it is seen from every side rather than against a wall, and it marks a boundary or an entrance as much as it lights one. That is why the shape of the fixture matters more here than the amount of light it puts out.

Why the Cage Changes the Effect

A plain glass globe on a post produces an even ball of light and very little else. The banded cage over this one interrupts that, throwing curved shadow lines outward across the pier and the ground, so the fixture projects a pattern rather than just glowing.

It also solves the daytime problem. An unlit glass globe is a clear, slightly awkward sphere; the cage gives it structure and a silhouette that reads from a distance, which is what makes the fixture look deliberate on a gatepost in daylight as well as after dark, which is when most people actually see the front of a property.

A Replaceable E27 Bulb

The fixture takes a standard E27 screw bulb rather than an integrated LED, and that is a genuine advantage on an exterior fitting. When the light fails you change a bulb instead of replacing the whole lantern, and the fixture itself can reasonably last decades on the post it was fitted to.

It also puts the choice of light in your hands. A warm filament style LED suits the traditional shape shown in the images, while a brighter neutral bulb turns the same fixture into a working driveway light. Bulbs are not included, so this is a decision to make at the point of ordering.
