Hanging a pendant outdoors changes what the fixture has to do. Indoors a shade directs light downward onto a table; outdoors there is no ceiling to contain it, so a globe that throws light in every direction fills the space under a pergola far more evenly. The cage is what stops that becoming a bare bulb glaring at everyone seated beneath it.

Amber Glass and the Cage Around It

The glass is amber rather than clear, which does two things. It warms the light regardless of the bulb fitted, and it cuts the intensity of the source enough that the fixture can hang at head height over a table without being uncomfortable to sit under.

The banded aluminium cage adds the pattern. Light passing between the bands throws curved shadow lines onto the ceiling and the surrounding walls, which is the effect visible in the images on the beamed and arched ceilings. A plain globe gives none of this, and the difference is most obvious on a low ceiling where the pattern lands close enough to be read clearly.

Aluminium, IP54 and Where to Hang It

The frame is aluminium, so it will not rust or stain the surface below it the way a steel cage eventually does. That matters on a pendant, because anything running off the fixture lands directly on the table or paving underneath, where a rust streak is far harder to clean off than it is on a wall.

IP54 covers splashing water rather than sustained exposure, so this is a fixture for a covered porch, a breezeway, a pergola with a solid roof or a sheltered corridor. It is not intended for a position fully open to driven rain, and it is hardwired rather than plugged in.

Sizes, Bulb Choice and Drop

Three globe diameters are offered at 7, 9 and 10.6 inches, in bronze or black. Bronze suits the warmer stone and timber settings shown here; black is the sharper choice against painted steel or white render. Over a dining table the middle size is usually the right proportion, and the smallest suits a run of several down a corridor.

The bulb is not included, which leaves the output and colour to you. Something warm and low wattage suits the amber glass, and a filament style LED reads correctly through the cage. The chain gives 23.6 inches of adjustment for a total drop of 36.61 inches from the ceiling plate, and links can be removed where a shorter hang is needed over a walkway.
