Lantern Pendant Light in Ribbed Paper Over a Fabric Frame

Paper is the oldest way to soften a light and it still works. The shade glows evenly across its whole surface instead of throwing a hot spot below. There is no glare to look at and no hard shadow underneath. The paper is ribbed, so the surface has a fine horizontal texture that catches the light. Choose a round globe, a tall oval or a wide flat disc. Each is a different size as well as a different shape. All three hardwire in and take an E26 or E27 bulb.

Every pendant has to solve the same problem. A bulb is a small, very bright point, and a room needs a large, fairly dim one. Metal shades solve it by aiming the light somewhere useful. Glass shades solve it by tinting or scattering. Paper solves it by spreading the source out. The whole shade becomes the light, so nothing on it is bright enough to hurt. That is why paper lanterns still turn up in rooms full of modern fittings.

Three Shapes, and They Are Not the Same Light

This is worth reading before you order. The size option changes the shape as well as the size. The 16 in is a round globe. The 11.5 in is a tall oval that stands 19.5 in high. The 22.5 in is a wide flat disc only 9 in deep.

They behave differently. The globe is the all rounder and suits a hallway or a bedroom. The tall oval reads as a column and works in a stairwell or beside a high window. The wide disc is the one for a dining table, because it spreads light across the width of the table rather than down onto one spot.

Hanging Height and Clearance

Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 in above the table top. Over a hallway or in a bedroom, keep at least 7 ft of headroom underneath. The tall oval needs the most thought, since the shade alone is 19.5 in from top to bottom.

The wide disc is 22.5 in across. Measure the table before you commit. As a rough guide the shade should be about half the width of the table, so the disc suits a table around 40 in wide or more. On a narrow table it will overhang the edges.

Looking After a Paper Shade

Paper does not like heat or damp. Use an LED bulb, which runs cool, and keep it well clear of the paper. Do not fit one of these in a bathroom or over a stove. A dining room, bedroom, hallway or living room is the right home for it.

For dusting, a soft brush or a hair dryer on cool is enough. Do not use a damp cloth. The socket is E26 or E27 and no bulb is supplied. A warm white LED around 2700K keeps the paper looking cream rather than grey. The fixture is rated for 110V-120V as well as 220V-240V, so it runs on a US circuit, and it weighs only about 2.2 lb.
