Semi Flush Mount Dome Ceiling Light with Opal Glass Globe

A ceiling light in a hallway has a job a pendant does not. It has to light the floor without hanging in the way. This one keeps the whole fixture close to the ceiling. The metal dome sits under the canopy and the glass globe drops just below it. You get the shape of a pendant with the clearance of a flush mount. At 7.8 inches deep it clears the top of a door.

What the Opal Glass Globe Does to the Light

The bulb never shows. It sits inside a white opal glass globe, and that glass is what you actually see lit. Opal glass scatters light instead of passing it straight through. The whole globe glows at one even brightness.

That matters most when you look up. A bare bulb in a hallway leaves a bright dot in your eye for a few seconds afterwards. This one does not, because nothing on the fixture is much brighter than anything else.

The metal dome on top does the second half of the work. It blocks the light going upward and pushes it down and out. So the floor gets lit and the ceiling stays dim, which makes a low ceiling feel further away than it is.

Where a Damp Rated Ceiling Light Can Go

Damp rated means the fixture is built for still moisture in the air. A bathroom ceiling qualifies. So does a covered porch, a laundry, or a roofed walkway where rain cannot reach it.

What damp rated does not cover is direct water. Keep it out of a shower enclosure and away from a spot where spray can land on the glass. For those you need a wet rated fixture instead.

Indoors it is simply a ceiling light. The rooms it was photographed in run from a panelled study to a hallway, a living room and a child's landing. Any of them work.

Fitting, Bulbs and Everyday Care

This is a hardwired fixture. It screws to a ceiling box behind the metal canopy, so there is no plug and no cord. An ordinary wall switch runs it.

The socket takes an E26 or E27 screw bulb up to 40 watts, or the LED equivalent. A warm white bulb reads best through opal glass. A cool white one makes the glass look grey rather than white.

There is no driver built in, so the fixture works with a separate dimmer switch. The dimmer is not included, and the bulb you fit has to be a dimmable one as well.

Cleaning is a dry cloth on the painted metal and a slightly damp one on the glass. Let the bulb cool first. Skip cream cleaners and scouring pads on the dome, because the paint is what gives it the colour.
