Because the globes are always white, the colour sits above them and reads as a band rather than as a lit surface. That is a gentler way to bring colour into a ceiling than a coloured shade, which would tint the light itself.

White and beige effectively disappear into a pale ceiling and leave you with two floating globes. Green and red are the assertive choices and work best in a room with a painted wall or a strong rug already in it. Black is the compromise: it draws a hard line above the glass and reads as graphic rather than colourful, which suits a plain white hallway that needs one deliberate detail.
